About Moving Essence and why we dance

Mere_DavidThere is a unique essence to every individual.  To live well is to truly get to know and be ourselves in all aspects – the astounding bits and the disappointing parts.

Unfortunately, the mind often gets in the way making this process more difficult than it needs to be.  It tells us that ‘we’re not right’, what we ‘should do’, what we ‘think of others’ or what the future will look like long before we have even reached it.  And this is just a small sample of the myriad machinations of our ‘monkey mind’.

Some people meditate, jog or swim – whatever works is great. We have found that the best way to escape this trap, is to move.  We Dance.  Over and over again, so that we become free and practiced at the art of living who we really are… This is not a practice where you show your best moves or learn the right steps. To dance consciously is to be aware of the chatter, and follow a more natural instinct. To move from the inside out…

“Dance is the fastest most direct way to the truth” – Gabrielle Roth

“Dance, when you’re broken open. Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free” – Rumi

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost” – Martha Graham

Our work is grounded in the 5Rhythms, the elegant map given to the world by Gabrielle Roth (1941 – 2012). We have both been fortunate enough to train with Gabrielle Roth and senior teachers of this work. Alongside other teachers, we are committed to having this potent, healing, fun medicine reach as many people as possible. – David & Meredith

For over a decade Meredith Davies and David Juriansz have been a dynamic duo for 5Rhythms in Australia.

David used to go to the blue light disco and secretly wished he could dance, but boys in country towns don’t do that sort of thing. Instead he channelled his intrinsic love of music and movement into sport and later music performance.

He took a winding path – juggling jobs as an editor, health professional, project manager, songwriter, community musician, performer and facilitator while supporting Meredith’s path as a 5Rhythms teacher. After 12 years of dancing and producing 5Rhythms events, the call to teach came. He was part of the last training group to work with Gabrielle Roth, a decade after Meredith, in 2011. Since that time he has transformed the weekly class Meredith started into the ‘Tsunami Wave’ – a deep catalytic journey for over 150 dancers. His humour, storytelling, and passion for the embodiment of the 5Rhythms, engages both newcomers and long-term dancers. David has offered classes interstate and overseas, continues his love of a weekly practice and his interest in composing music for ‘Live Wave’ 5Rhythms events.

Meredith’s earliest loves were movement based – drama, dance and gymnastics. She trained to work as a health professional and creative dance facilitator in the mental health and disability fields. In the late 80’s she discovered Gabrielle Roth’s book ‘Maps to Ecstasy’ and her passion for embodied movement was ignited. It wasn’t until she moved to London in the mid 90’s that she discovered 5Rhythms classes. She completed her 5Rhythms training with Gabrielle Roth in America in 2001. She taught classes and workshops in Europe before returning home in 2003 to offer the first weekly 5Rhythms® classes in Australia.

Since that time she has added two kids, moved out of Melbourne, seduced her husband into the 5Rhythms and has built an enormous dance tribe with her welcoming and enticing style.

Meredith continues to teach weekly classes, workshops, committed groups, work in schools and offer ‘live music waves’. As the ‘mother’ of 5Rhythms in Melbourne it was her passion and vision that put Melbourne on the international 5Rhythms map.
